PURITANS, WITCHES, COMMUNISTS…OH MY! (THE FUN BUNCH)
We are about to embark on the study and discussion of Early American Literature that focuses on our forefathers—the Puritans. Of Course, I will give a basic overview of this group in class, but before I do; I would like for you to have a little background on them. I want you to utilize the internet to find certain information about these disciplined and dedicated religious reformers (some would say zealots). I also want you to discover the background of one of their more infamous activities—the Salem Witch Trials. Finally, I want you to measure how much we have changed as a society since the time of the Puritans.
-WHO WERE THE PURITANS?
THE PRUITANS WERE A GROUP OF RELIGIOUS REFORMERS FROM ENGLAND. THEY WERE INFLUENTIAL DURING THE 17TH CENTURY IN ENGLAND. THE PURITANS FOUGHT THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR AND ACTUALLY DETHRONED THE KING AND RULED ENGLAND FOR TEN YEARS. (1649-1660)
-WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
THE PURITANS SETTELED IN MOST OF PRESENT DAY MASSACHUSETTS AND PROVIDED MANY OF THE CORE CHARACTERISTICS OUR COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED UPON.

-“PURIFY THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND”
-LITERAL INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE
-SAW GOD AS A VENGEANCE DRIVEN BEING
-BANNED MUSIC, DANCING, AND THE THEATER
-ESTEEMED THE VALUES OF PRUDENCE, THRIFT, HARD WORK, COURAGE, AND SELF-RELIANCE
-POVERTY WAS A SIN; IT SHOWED A LACK OF ENTERPRISE
-HAD NO WAY OF WASHING AWAY SINS
-BELIEVED YOU WERE GOOD OR EVIL

-A COURT THAT DETERMINED IF A PERSON WAS A WITCH OR
-OCCURRED IN 1692.
-19 PEOPLE WERE HANGED; 1 MAN PRESSED; 3 DOGS WERE HANGED
-OVER 150 PEOPLE WERE JAILED.
